Chapter Eight
Julian sat at Zero’s computer, checking up on the contracts his lover had set up a week ago. So far, three of Edwards’s top five men had been eliminated. Julian sat back, rubbing at his chin. What the hell did it mean that it didn’t bother him that those men were dead? He’d checked into their backgrounds, and they weren’t good guys, but it shouldn’t matter. Murder was wrong, the end. His mother was a doctor, for Christ’s sake. Then again, I’m not a good guy, either, am I? he mused, mind shying away yet again from the image of the dead body on the floor.
“What have we got?” Zero said from behind him.
Julian swiveled around. His lover lounged in the doorway, looking like sin personified. Zero wore jeans and a tight t-shirt, and no shoes. He’d shaved his head, but left the stubble on his face. Julian’s cock twitched, which was ridiculous. He’d had more sex the past week than he’d ever had before in his entire frigging life. He should be exhausted. He shouldn’t want to tackle Zero and strip him naked. He took a deep breath, willing his overactive libido to calm the fuck down. “Three dead. Two to go,” he said, eyes going to the bulge at Zero’s groin.
Zero nodded. “Felix called. I updated him on the situation.” He absently rubbed at the scar on his chest.
Julian couldn’t see it through the t-shirt Zero wore, but he knew that the injury wasn’t healing nearly as well as either of them had hoped it would. Probably because we shouldn’t be fucking on every available surface, he thought, feeling a pang of guilt. He knew Zero should have been resting, and instead, the two of them were screwing around, every spare minute. “My mother texted, too,” he said, instead of putting his worry about Zero’s wound into words. He shouldn’t be worrying. Zero was a big boy. And it wasn’t like they were in love, or anything. They could stop at any time, right? In your dreams, a small voice at the back of his head accused. Julian ignored it. He couldn’t face the thought that he might be falling for a killer. No, not a killer. A fixer, which is almost worse. A killer does one thing very well. A fixer enables multiple levels of criminality. And Zero, well… He isn’t going to change, because he’s entirely okay with what he is. Hell, you don’t want him to change.
“Oh?” Zero’s tone encouraged an explanation.
Julian pulled himself together. “No one seems to be following her,” he said, shrugging. “Which is a relief.” He pushed away his unease. He liked Zero. And he wasn’t committing to anything by hanging around for a few more weeks. His apartment was paid through the next month. His investments were doing well. He had nowhere else he needed to be. As long as his Uncle Dave, the cop, didn’t find out about any of this, he was golden.
Zero smiled, sexy as fuck, even though Julian knew he wasn’t trying to be.
